What is it: Residential solar pv systems are installations at residential homesites, usually roof top, sometimes ground mount. These systems are interconnected into the grid and net-metered on your electricity bill.

Solar Systems Impact on Home Values

Adding a photovoltaic (PV) solar system to a house is almost always a good real estate investment and may contribute to increasing home values by 3 to 4 percent. The combined benefit of higher resale value and lifetime energy savings makes solar a compelling financial investment.

One study by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory , which analyzed the sale of nearly 4,000 homes with solar in eight states, determined that some buyers are willing to pay a premium of $12,000-$15,000 for a home with an average-sized, resident-owned solar array.  That illustrates how important it is for buyers and sellers to familiarize themselves with how solar affects property values.

Achieving Energy Independence

Most residential solar systems are tied into the grid which allows you to pull energy from utility lines and push unused energy from your solar system to the grid. Being grid-tied is a way to achieve reliability and cost reductions.  Greater energy independence can be achieve when solar is paired with battery storage. A homeowner can add battery storage to their solar system to power their home when the grid goes down, if utilities have time of use rates, or to go off grid completely.
